Modern Africa Wars Part 3: Helicopters

Here is a closeup of one of the two Puma's I have painted. Heller made them. They crop up from time to time on Ebay. They were also recast by Roskopf Military Models. I have a QRF Puma and the resin body was covered in small bubble holes. In trying to smooth it out I ruined the model. That's when I started my search on Ebay. I managed to pick them up for about $16 each. It took me about a year. It's not horribly different from what I'd pay from QRF. Plus they're lighter. The third one I'm working on right now will have open doors like in the reference pic I used from the ARMA II Bush Wars mod website. I checked and it's accurate based on the google images I found. I just find that these ARMA screenshots are easier to paint from.

I decided to leave the wheels down so it would sit on the ground a little better. As you can see, I used a large magnet purchased at the craft store. I could have used a fancy rare earth magnet, but painted black like the stand I don't think it detracts to much from the model.

The stand is a round piece of styrene (Evergreen brand, purchased at the local train store) cut in half. I shove one end into the hole of a 1" washer and glue it in place. Then I glue that to a piece of oval wood from the craft store and glue a magnet to the other end. The whole thing is painted black and then the bottom end receives spackle, sand, paint, dry brushing, and flock.

I'll keep you up to date on my attempts to fit sheet styrene into the body of the model and place troopers in the doors. I managed to cut a door off last night. It took some doing with a #11 Exacto. I just ordered some Peter Pig figures for the doors. I'm torn whether to put Paras in the doorway (seated IDF) or use 32 Btn figures as shown in the picture above. I have a completed Para unit, but I am still working on the 32 Btn figures.

Next post. The many versions of the Alouette III.
